It is brilliant narrative work to do so much with one scene, and it could be safe to say that this is the most striking part of the pilot and series thus far. The fact that a pretty young idol is graphically murdered, with the apparent motive being that a crazed stalker felt betrayed by Ai having children, emphasizes the critique of Japan’s entertainment industry that comes in bits and pieces before the twist. This narrative shift seems to be behind a lot of the anime’s high rating on MAL, and has generated significant discussion about this series in the anime community. Anime studio Doga Kobo revealed on its website on April 6 that the company would be closed from April 6 to April 17 due to a rapid increase. This scene shockingly and swiftly transitions the narrative from its prologue to the real meat of the plot, which follows Aqua finding out who his mother’s killer’s accomplice is and getting revenge. This scene also takes place after the show initially seemed to play with humor in exploring the children having more mature minds because of their knowledge of their past life, which marks a tonal dissonance here that only makes the story that much more interesting. This twist, though hinted at when Gorou is killed by a seedy Ai fanboy earlier in the pilot, comes mostly as a surprise because it happens at a moment in which it seems the narrative is content to explore Ai’s relationship to her reincarnated children, Aqua and Ruby.
